Blue Boston Terrier

in Boston Terrier Breeding

Many people are strongly opposed to breeding colored Boston Terriers. The AKC doesn’t recognize colored Boston Terriers − such as red/liver, chocolate, or blue.

The Blue Boston Terrier is increasing in popularity. It is a dilution of the traditional black color and is a result of poor breeding practices.

Many Blue Boston’s have been reported to have hair loss, skin problems, and allergies.

If you are considering adopting a blue Boston you should do extensive research on the breeder, and have the puppy examined by a veterinarian.

I do agree with you on some points but would like to correct a couple of things. Yes please research breeders of ALL colors of Boston Terriers, make sure they health test for the major health concerns of the breed. If the Breeder does not have the puppy checked by a Vet before the puppy comes home, then for sure take it to your Vet ASAP to make sure it is healthy. Yes some Blue or Lilac Bostons can have Alopecia or hair loss.

Good breeders breed away from breeding blue to blue for generations and breed factored dogs with good hair count to help with this. A good breeder will not be breeding for color first but for health, conformance, disposition, and improvement. Color should be the last consideration.

Blue Boston Terriers can be a dilute from black, but the color also comes from the dogs that made up the Boston Terrier Breed in the 1800s. In the old Boston Terrier History Books it is recorded that a blue/white dog was brought in from Scotland, and used in the make up of the breed for just one example. Blue Bostons are not the product of poor breeding practices, BUT there are many breeders out there exploiting the Colors for their own gain and do not have good goals or programs.

AKC DOES recognize the Colors Blue, Red, Fawn and will register the dogs with their correct colors. Colored Boston Terriers can compete in any AKC Venue accept Conformation, which only the traditional colors of black/white, brindle and true seal can . Colored Boston Terriers can be and are shown in Conformation in the UCA Registry.

A Blue Boston is A Colored Boston Terrier and a Boston Terrier DNA’d and Proven. When buying a Puppy of any breed, do your research first and make the right fit for your family and new lifetime furry family member!

I have several blue bostons terriers and they have thicker coats than my blk and white. They are calmer, and I would consider a nicer quality than my registered show colored boston.
Health problems are not related to a coat color.
Many have known that this is an attempt from show breeders to discredit the now show colors. Sad thing over all this false info on colored dogs only shows how low many AKC show breeders will go to run down the natural colors that are produced with in the breed. Why not love the entire breed and offer a colored class and a regular class. AKC would benefit by doing this and try to bring people back to showing there dogs. Until this close minded attitude from show breeders changes it will only incourage people to stay clear of these events and people. Colored boston owners do not judge other bostons, but love them all!!
