If you are interested in adopting a red Boston Terrier, here is some more information and pictures about them.
Out of all the non-traditional colors of Boston Terriers, the red boston one of the most recognized.
There are a lot of variations in red bostons. Some are very light and some are dark orange-red. Red Boston Terriers typically have a red nose and either gold or hazel eyes. Sometimes they are referred to as liver-colored Bostons.
As cute as red bostons can be … be aware that red bostons do not fit the breed standard; therefore, they do not qualify for AKC dog shows. They are accepted by the APRI (America’s Pet Registry, Inc.) though.

I’m thinking about getting a red boston terrier, but some people have told me that they are not as healthy as the traditional bostons, is this true? what do you recommend I do? I really like the red color. I think they’re beautiful.
I do find it odd that AKC will issue the red bostons registration papers, and will register any puppies from them, but yet they will not let them show. This seems to me a money making thing. If they think they are good enough to issue papers on why aren’t they good enough to show at their shows?
Mador is a 4month old 125 six seal but he is a red. Would luv more info
AKC is just a registry, much like the DMV. They only care that the parents were registered with AKC, they don’t care if they meet the breed standard. The standard is developed and set by the parent club, The Boston Terrier Club of America. Also, everyone please note that “seal” is NOT “red”. Seal appears black except it has a red cast when viewed in the sun or bright light.
If you breed a black and a red do you get a mixture or is black the dominate?
Thanks
Are there any problems with breeding a blue male with a red female? I’m looking at a black and white puppy who is the product of such a breeding. Will it have the skin and possibly hearing loss problems associated with those colors?
@Susan, the more important questions to be asking yourself are: Does the breeder do any health testing on the parents? What about the puppies before placing them? The common health tests for Bostons are an eye exam (called CERF), a hearing exam (called BAER), an OFA patella exam, and a DNA test for Juvenile Cataracts. Is the puppy being sold on a spay/neuter contract? Does the breeder show in conformation events to know their dogs conform to the Standard? What type of health guarantee against genetic defects does the breeder offer?
Is a red Boston more unhealthy then a black?
we bought a blk and white nice quality AKC registered boston from florida traditional markings no white over ears or blue eyes etc and found out later he is fully deaf in both ears. we also have a red from the same breeder and she is very healthy. To say a unshowable colored dog is unhealthy is only a show breeder discouraging non show color dogs. Bostons come in all colors and AKC registers cream fawn blue splashes etc they are all purebred and these colors are in the genes. You can even show the colored dogs with some registries. Colored animals were looked at as wrong for years. People thought that is was someones pride and vanity to have a flashy e.g. pinto horse and was looked down on in the show ring e.g. jumping. Any color dog horse etc owner will know that there is always been two groups of people the people that like flash and the different colors. And those that like the plain or tradional colors. It is sad that people have to bad mouth the other group but our world is full of judgement!
There is sick and unhealthy and poor temperament dogs in all colors registered or not. I have personally witnessed more ill tempered and sick dogs from heavy line breeding for doubling up on winning show lines than someone that is trying to breed a healthy good natured family dogs. Selling dogs is a billion dollar industry and with that you get all types of sales people and breeders good and bad.
Use your own judgement listen to your gutt feelings. Does the dog look like the breed standard, How often is the dog bred, where is is housed – barn kennel house etc. what are they fed, do they see a vet annually. How long has the breeder bred, do they do genetic testing. what is the written health guarantee. Do they have referances, Have they had any health issues produced in there puppies. If in doubt ask questions. If the breeder does not answer the questions but dances around the questions move on!!
I just purchased a red boston terrier. He is so beautiful and hes registered with AKC. But I didnt know that this breed came with so many problems. Should I use this dog as one of my studs? what should i do? What kind of problems should i look out for?
I bought a blk Boston from a Red father and black mother. It was their second litter and no reds yet. And babies have all the wonderful qualities. They are little beauties.
