Most puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills—where dozens, or sometimes even hundreds, of dogs are kept in tiny, infested crates for their entire lives. There sole purpose in life is to reproduce. Puppies born in puppy mills often have genetic defects and health problems. So make sure your pet store only purchases puppies from local breeders that follow best breeding practices.

2. Have the puppies had proper veterinary care?

Puppies should see the vet as soon as they are born. They should be checked for any abnormalities etc. They should receive their first round of shots at 8 weeks old. Make sure you check that the pet store follows this protocol.

3. Is the health of the puppy guaranteed?

Good breeders generally offer a guarantee on the health of their puppies. Any good pet store should do the same.

4. Are the puppies AKC registered?

Boston terriers should be registered with the AKC if you are planning on showing them.

5. Are the puppies reasonably priced?

The average price for a Boston terrier puppy is between $700-$1,000.

6. Are the puppies old enough to be away from their mothers?

Puppies should be kept with their mothers and the rest of the litter for at least 8 weeks. This helps them develop social skills, behavioral skills, and they’re still learning from their mothers at this stage.

7. Are the puppies being cared for?

Make sure the puppies are receiving proper nutritional care and are in a clean, safe, loving environment.

8. Do you know the history of the puppies’ parents?

A good pet store will be able to provide information about the mother and father of the puppy. Do the parents have a history of health or behavioral problems? Ask the pet store owner what makes this puppy unique.

9. Is the puppy playful and responsive?

When you’re shopping for a puppy you should make sure the puppy is playful and responsive. A puppy that is not interested in you will be much more difficult to train, socialize, and bond with. Chose carefully!

10. Does the pet store have testimonials from previous buyers?

One thing I always recommend to people is to request testimonials from the pet store. If the pet store follows all of the above guidelines, people should be happy with their puppies, and they should have testimonials to prove it!
