First off- what exactly does neutering entail? It’s simply the removal of testicles so that your dog can’t inadvertently make puppies!

If you’re wondering whether or not you should have your Boston terrier neutered, look no further – here are the pros and cons of the procedure:

The Pros of Neutering

1. Eliminates The Risk Of Pregnancy

The overpopulation of dogs in America is a severe issue. If you allow your dog to breed, I hate to say it — but you are part of the problem

2. Helps Prevent Behavior Problems

• Dominance
Boston terriers that haven’t been neutered are more stubborn. Their increased testosterone seems to cause them to resist authority.

• Marking (AKA peeing on everything!)
Unneutered Boston terriers often want to pee on everything, so that other male dogs will smell it. This is their way of marking their territory!

• Aggressive Behavior
Your Boston terrier is more likely to pick a fight with another unneutered male.

• Distress Around Females In Heat
Female dogs in heat give off chemical pheromones that can be detected from far away! Unneutered dogs often become extremely agitated and will try everything from whining, drooling, pacing, and sometimes escaping their house or yard.

• Sexual Arousal
We have all seen it—and it’s embarrassing! Dogs that aren’t neutered often lick their genitals and hump other dogs, pillows, stuffed animals, and sometimes even people!

3. Helps Prevent Health Problems

If you have your Boston terrier neutered, you can rule out the possibility of testicular tumors and reduce the risk that your Boston will develop prostate disease and perianal tumors (as these diseases are stimulated by testosterone.)

Note: If your Boston terrier has a retained testicle or testicles, neutering is essential. A dog with a retained testicle has an increased likelihood of developing a tumor, unless removed.

The Cons of Neutering

1. Neutered Dogs Can’t Participate In Some Dog Shows

The American Kennel Club allows spayed and neutered Boston terriers to participate in all phases of obedience, agility, and junior handling, but not in most conformation classes.

2. Neutering Costs Money

The surgery can cost two to three hundred dollars when the safest anesthetic is used and all possible safety precautions are taken. (Spending money is never a good thing, but sometimes it’s necessary!)

3. Requires General Anesthesia—Which Can Be Risky!

Just make sure you don’t cut corners if you’re having your Boston terrier neutered. Don’t take your dog to a shotty clinic, have it done safely at a veterinarian you can trust.

4. You Won’t Be Able To Breed Your Dog

If you decide later on that you would like to breed your dog, you won’t be able to. The procedure is not reversible!

Have you had your Boston terrier neutered? If you’ve experienced any of this first-hand, please leave a comment below — or head over to forum and start a discussion.

Many Blue Boston’s have been reported to have hair loss, skin problems, and allergies.

If you are considering adopting a blue Boston you should do extensive research on the breeder, and have the puppy examined by a veterinarian.

Many people think my Boston Terrier is a French bull dog. Personally, I can see a big difference between the two breeds − but here are the differences in greater detail.

Coloring
Boston Terriers are typically black or seal with white markings across the muzzle, between the eyes, and across the forechest. French bull dogs don’t have these white markings.

Body
Boston’s are slimmer than French bull dogs and have longer legs. Frenchies are typically shorter and stockier than Bostons. French bull dogs also typically have larger ears than Boston Terriers, they are said to have “bat ears.”

Agility
Bostons are very agile and love to run, jump, swim, and play; Frenchies aren’t so “athletic.” Frenchies are typically more “laid back” than Bostons and can’t swim due to their build.

Health Issues
Unfortunately, both breeds suffer the same breathing problems and cannot tolerate intense heat.

Here are some pictures of French Bull Dogs. For pictures of Boston Terriers, Click Here.

Let me set the record straight … “mini” Boston Terriers do not exist. If you happen to come across a breeder who says they sell “mini” or “teacup” Boston Terriers, BEWARE.

The breeder is most likely a dishonest, backyard breeder who is trying to monetize on a puppy’s misfortunate health condition.

The average size for a Boston Terrier should be as follows:

Height: 15-17 inches
Weight: 10-25 pounds

If you find a Boston Terrier that is less than 10 pounds it will most likely develop an array of health issues. A “mini” Boston Terrier may be the result of a runt bred with another runt- which will result in genetic health problems.

Realize that “mini” Bostons are not recognized by the AKC and should not be bred.

Out of all the non-traditional colors of Boston Terriers, the red boston one of the most recognized.

There are a lot of variations in red bostons. Some are very light and some are dark orange-red. Red Boston Terriers typically have a red nose and either gold or hazel eyes. Sometimes they are referred to as liver-colored Bostons.

As cute as red bostons can be … be aware that red bostons do not fit the breed standard; therefore, they do not qualify for AKC dog shows. They are accepted by the APRI (America’s Pet Registry, Inc.) though.

This is a huge responsibility and you need to make sure you do a lot of research before rushing into anything. It could end up being disastrous if you’re not careful so make sure you consider every detail.

Some important things to consider when choosing a mate for your little lady:

The Breed Standard

If you’re trying to breed show class puppies, you need to choose a really good stud for your dog!

Make sure you study the breed standard for Boston Terriers, if you’re not familiar with it. That way when you’re searching for a mate for your dog, you’ll know what to look for!

For example, you should look at head size, stance, and proportions. Do they look like a good example of the breed?

You should take all of these factors into consideration if you’re trying to breed show dogs. People pay good money for a show puppy, but they expect perfection in return.

Potential Health Problems

The most important thing you should look for in a mate is HEALTH!

Puppies are brought into the world all too often with an array of health problems. So make sure to check the mate’s health history before breeding your dog.

For example with a Boston Terrier you should look out for brachycephalic syndrome, patellar luxation, hermivertebrae, sensorineual deafness, and eye problems, as these are all common health problems amongst Boston Terriers.

You should have any potential mates checked by a vet to make sure your potential puppies have the best chance at life!

Remember, do your research! Breeding your Boston Terrier should be done in a well-researched and controlled environment!
