Boston Terrier Temperament

in Dog Socialization

Boston Terriers are not delicate little lap dogs by any means. They are small, sturdy, and are generally good-natured with other people and animals. Boston’s are energetic dogs that love to play and chase things!

Here are some things that you will have to learn to love if you have a Boston Terrier:

• Snoring, drooling, snuffling
• Gassiness
• Playfulness

Here are the main concerns that most people have when adopting a Boston. You should take all of these factors into consideration before you adobt a Boston Terrier.

Unstable Temperament
If you get your dog from a good breeder, this should not be an issue. Unfortunately, many breeders don’t have the slightest idea how to breed a good-tempered dog. Dog trainers have reported Bostons that have neurotic behavior such as barking, hyperactivity, and aggression. Training is key and you will need to train your Boston to respect you.

Housebreaking Can be Arduous
Boston’s are rather slow at being housebroken. It could take up to 4-6 months of dedicated crate training.

Sounds
Not everyone loves all the little snorts, snuffles, wheezes, and grunts! They have a short face, they can’t help it.

Slobbering
When Bostons drink, they slobber quite a bit, they have loose jowls and can’t really help this either.

Gassiness
Boston Terrier’s have a gas problem that will make you run for cover!

Chronic Health Problems
Again, this is due to over-breeding and poor breeding practices. Make sure you do your research about your breeder before adopting a puppy.

Remember, every Boston Terrier is going to be different. Boston’s are like people, each one has a unique personality. In spite of all the “Boston Terrier Concerns,” I LOVE MY BOSTON and I wouldn’t trade her for the world!

Now here are all the reasons you should get a Boston Terrier!

Best Companions
Boston Terriers are the best companions. They won’t leave your side, and will love you to no end.

World’s Best Kisser and Snugglers
Boston’s are the world’s best kissers, and snugglers! They especially like to get under the covers with you.

They Can Hold Their Own
Boston’s can hold their own at the dog park, you don’t have to worry about your dog getting trampled at the dog park. They like to play with big dogs.

They’re Funny
Boston’s will make you laugh. Forget TV, just watch the dog!

Smart
Boston’s love to learn. They want to do everything they can to please you, so it makes teaching them tricks, very easy. They’re super smart!

Suggestion: If you are interested in getting a Boston Terrier but you’re worried about some of the “negative characteristics,” you should definitely look into adopting an adult Boston Terrier.

You will know exactly what you are getting … no surprises! Plus, there are tons of Boston’s that need a good home, check out rescue shelters.

I recently adopted an estimated 2 year old boston male. We have had him for about a month now. He is a wonderful dog. He was already house broke. He shakes, sits, rolls over, speaks, and twirls. He loves my grand kids, snuggles (bed hog), sleeps under covers, and is very playful. He loves loves loves to fetch. He has a running streak, so we keep him leashed for now til we get him better trained and he has acclimated to his surroundings. We call it the “SQUIRREL!!!!” effect. LOL. All good til he sees a squirrel, then snap. I could not have found a better dog to adopt. He is eager to please and very loving.

We recently adopted a 9 month old female Boston female from our Humane Society. We already had a 7 year old Boston female from rescue. They are both absolutely wonderful dogs. They both have very different personalities, but love to lay in our laps and sleep or be petted. They love walks, play and begging. I could never imagine being without them. I’ve never had so many puppy kisses. Loving Loving Loving that’s all I can say.
